We’re quite excited to present the first “Joost Labs” project: Project Jigsaw.
Project Jigsaw is a small project that experiments with how we present music videos, both visually and how the music line up is created. It allows you to play music using “artist name”, “tag name” or “last.fm profile name” to fill your queue with good music. You can also use the search box to search for more music and then drag’n'drop them to your queue, or re-arrange your queue by drag’n'dropping videos around.
We have over 10000 music videos on Joost, so Joost can be used as a pretty good jukebox. As we do not have all the music in the world on Joost though (naturally
), we use last.fm to look up related artists for the artist you’ve chosen and find music that is related in our content catalogue.
FAQ:
- Why did we do this? Because we love music, and we like to experiment.
- Where will this go from here? Who knows
- Why is it missing feature X? Because it’s an experiment, it’s not meant to be perfect
- Will it break tomorrow? Possibly (”get it while it’s hot” … and works!
)
So go ahead and try it out. We look forward to hearing your feedback on it!

This is pretty cool - keep innovating!
Nice Job and good to see Viacom finally putting its Joost and last.fm investments to good use
This truly rocks. I’m afraid you just lost a Joost user & gained a Labs.Joost user
This thing will be on 24/7.
Radio is dead!!!!!
Nice!
BUGS:
If I skip to next track, it goes quiet, then there’s sometimes a brief burst of the old track before the new one begins.
If I skip back/forward fast enough, it’ll sometimes play one track whilst looking like it’s playing another.
FEATURE REQUESTS:
Volume control (including INCREASING volume)
Full screen mode, even if that requires jaggy scaling.
Would be good if you could (optionally) scrobble back to last.fm too, and give “love this track” feedback.
Brilliant app though, love it!
Last.fm is my own personalised radio station, Jigsaw is my own personalised music TV channel - Thanks - Fantastic!
Nick
Oh… and in the line-up, would appreciate some way to read a bit more of the title than “The Making Of T…” - even if I have to hover over it or something.
It’s still brilliant - just trying to help you make it PERFECT
Nick
Really great to see this ship!
Suggestions -
Make a slimmer version (hide the curtains and visual playlist) that can be embedded in social network, blog posts more easily. Make a few genre-specific presets too, eg. hop-hop, ska, rock, … (though this could be done by picking some last.fm users with appropriate taste). Expose enough API so that users could have their listening stream, faves etc be sent back to the last.fm scrobbler interface.
@Nosey Nick: Thanks for the nice comments. We might do a version 2 at some point, and I’ll be sure to remember your suggestions. We actually do have a fullscreen button, it’s just not obvious
Try clicking on the Joost logo.
@Dan Brickley: All noted for version 2. Especially the scrobbling is clearly something we really should do
Sounds interesting. Thanks for info .I like You Now! (sounds weird.. should say I follow you Now!.. )
